The All-New 2024 Lexus GX Is Built For Adventure

The All-New 2024 Lexus GX Is Built For Adventure

It’s been a minute since Lexus did any major design upgrades to its GX models, but after 14 years, the popular SUV is finally getting the makeover it deserves for 2024. The GX was first introduced in 2010, with the same base as the Land Cruiser Prado, the smaller version of the Land Cruiser. The international Prado is often used as a police car or ambulance due to its rugged prowess. At the same time, the American version was given luxurious upgrades to cater to those looking for a full-sized SUV with a lush interior and sophisticated accents.

But even after 14 years, the GX is still popular, especially among the off-road crowd who score them at incredible prices on the secondary market and then fix them up for their trail adventures. Many of these second-hand models were still in excellent condition, given they were owned by families that primarily used them for everyday errands. But not everyone knew about the GX’s off-road capabilities or that it shared the same platform as the ever-popular Toyota 4Runner. So if you knew, you scored on an off-roading sleeper that was rugged and luxurious simultaneously!

Lexus will offer a few different models with its newly redesigned 2024 version, which will have six grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and all-new for Lexus, Overtrail and Overtrail+.

Rugged Yet Refined Exterior

The all-new GX has an edgy, rigid, rugged exterior design. Lexus designers wanted to ensure it could handle good off-road experiences, and even though the GX looks tough from the outside, they designed it to have a calming, luxurious, and modern interior. So you get the best of both worlds – tough on the outside, smooth on the inside!

The GX has a new look with a square-body profile and horizontal design motif. It also sports the Lexus spindle-body concept with a bold and resolute design that aids in off-roading. Its taut body and wide track create a grounded and stable stance 3.74″ wider than its predecessor. Plus, the Premium Triple Beam LED headlamps and grille opening are raised to avoid potential road impact and LED fog and cornering lamps are available for increased visibility. On top of that, the front overhang has been decreased by 0.78″ for better clearance. The seamless grille and headlamp integration lead to a powerful presence.

The updated GX also has a commanding presence. It has a horizontally flowing body, a 2.36″ increase on the wheelbase and the A-pillar has been pulled back for better visibility and improved ground clearance. With a total length of 2.75″ longer than before, plus the massive 33″ tires on 18″ wheels on the Overtrail grades, you won’t miss it. The rear tread has been increased too: 3.26″ on the Premium and Luxury grades plus 4.06″ for the Overtrail grades, so you can confidently tackle tricky off-roading.

At first glance, you’ll notice its square, aggressive stance at the back and the signature unified L-shaped light bar continues. Lexus also updated the LEXUS logo as part of the Next Chapter design. It debuted back on our 2022 NX model. They listened to customer feedback and fitted a standard power rear lift door (a GX first) with a pop-out window. Plus, you can even get a kick sensor for hands-free convenience.

The 2024 GX will be offered in 11 exterior color options depending on grade: Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, GX-first Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, Nightfall Mica. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades will offer exclusive bi-tone exterior color combinations, including Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof.

Luxurious Interior

The all-new GX is the perfect combination of luxury and capability. Its rugged exterior is matched by an interior that will make every road trip a pleasure. Designed to provide a driver-focused cockpit, the all-new GX will give you the confidence to take on whatever journey you have ahead. Like the all-new RX, the all-new GX is loaded with modern and sophisticated interior elements that will make your time on the road a pleasant experience.

There are also some greatly improved features compared to its last generation model. Owners will love the lower, horizontal instrument panel design that carries into the dash and enhances the front and passenger seat experience. The clean, open space gives you excellent visibility and integrates a Head-Up Display (HUD) with the center’s 14″ Multimedia Touchscreen Display. Physical dials for air conditioning and volume are easy to use, and all off-road controls are near the gear shifter to reduce distraction. Plus, you’ll get wireless Apple CarPlay® Integration and Android Auto® Compatibility as standard and a 12.3 Multi-Information Display (MID).

With seating for seven, the 2024 GX is ready to impress! It has thoughtfully designed features to ease the load, help you find a comfortable driving position, and improve seat cushions, seatback bolsters, and headrests. Need a second-row configuration? You can choose between captain’s chairs or a 60:40 split-folding bench. Plus, there’s a one-motion tumble system for easy access to the third row and luggage space. You’ll find that the driver and front passenger seats have heated and ventilated seats standard, and the second row also has heated seats. If you opt for the third row, you can get either power or manual seat configurations. Safety has also been taken into consideration with the rear seat reminder feature.

If you’re looking to bring a bit of nature indoors, then the interior design of the 2024 GX is for you. It features earth tones that complement the great outdoors. You can choose from a semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe® trimmed interior in black, dapple gray, or saddle tan with black or dark brown-grained trim. The Overtrail grades even offer a GX-first color combination of black NuLuxe® trimmed interior with olive Ultrasuede accents or Chateau NuLuxe® adorned interior with olive Ultrasuede accents and black ornamentation.

The tech-focused interior of the Overtrail comes with six illuminated charging ports, four of which are in the Overtrail itself, plus a wireless charger in the front console tray. There’s also more interior storage thanks to a more prominent center console, extra door pockets and 12 cupholders. You can fit up to five suitcases in the trunk when the back row is folded, plus two additional storage spaces for smaller items. And a 120V AC inverter means there’s more power when you need it.

The 2024 GX has a standard 10-speaker premium surround sound system; you can upgrade to the 21-Speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound. Depending on grade, options such as Digital Key*, Cool Box, Head-Up Display, Traffic Jam Assist**, Cold Area Package, and Tonneau Cover may also be available.

Nimble Suspension

The Lexus GX for 2024 has the GA-F platform from the latest LX 600, giving it a strong yet lightweight frame for increased body rigidity and smoother driving. A double-wishbone front suspension works with the multi-link rear suspension to handle rough roads and corners. If you want even more control, you can choose Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which adjusts damping forces in real-time. It also comes with Electronic Power Steering (EPS) to respond better to different driving conditions.

Excellent Off-Road Prowess

The new 2024 GX has the great GA-F platform already featured on the LX 600. Not only is it super strong and lightweight, but it also makes the body more rigid and makes driving a lot smoother. The new SUV has a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension for good off-road performance and smooth on-road ability. You can even upgrade to the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which adjusts the damping forces based on what’s happening on the road. And, of course, the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) ensures a better feeling on- and off-road.

Performance-Based Powertains

You’ll have two powertrain options when you get the all-new GX in the US. It has a twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine and a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. With 349 hp and 479 lb.-ft. of torque, you’ll experience an improved performance compared to the previous V8 engine. And you’ll have steadier and consistent acceleration, whether on or off-road. Plus, you can tow up to 8,000 lbs. when you get the Premium, Premium+ or Overtrail.

First-Ever Lexus OVERTRAIL Grade

At the Tokyo Outdoor Show this year, Lexus introduced the Overtrail Project – an awesome initiative to inspire their customers to explore nature with some sophistication. As part of this project, they’re looking to include more options for its customers, such as products, accessories, gear, and experiences. And with the all-new Overtrail grade falling under this project’s umbrella, there’s plenty to look forward to!

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ models look tough and rugged on the outside, with various features. An exciting bi-tone exterior paint combo includes Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and the Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof. The color design was designed to connect with the outdoors, using calming earth tones to blend in with nature. The grades also come with 33″ Standard All-Terrain tires around 18″ wheels, black accented over fenders and an aluminum skid plate.

You’ll feel luxurious inside the Lexus GX, with its earth tones and Lexus-first Chateau with Olive Ultrasuede accents. The Overtrail+ grade has an exclusive seat design for superior off-road comfort, driver and front passenger massage seats, and a driver power cushion extender. That’s not all – the GX Overtrail also features Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems for optimal traction, as well as an Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) for improved wheel articulation. But best of all, it has an electronic locking rear differential exclusive to the Overtrail, so you’ll have maximum traction!

The 2024 GX will be made at the Tahara plant in Japan and is expected to go on sale in early 2024.
