Meet the Matrix Series 5: Rugged Aussie Off-Road Camper

First look at the all-new Matrix Series 5 – a rugged, reliable off-road camper from Australia

Australian Off Road (AOR) has been designing and manufacturing durable, high-quality camper trailers for over 24 years. The company was founded by Steve Budden, who struggled to find an off-road camper tough enough to withstand the harsh Australian outback. Determined to create something superior, he began building his own camper in his garage. What started as a one-man operation has since grown into a thriving business with a team of 120 skilled tradespeople. AOR now operates from a state-of-the-art factory and showroom, along with two additional sites spanning 8,500m² on the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

Steve was committed to designing and manufacturing an off-road camper rig built to withstand Australia’s toughest terrain and weather conditions, ensuring it could keep up with even the most adventurous 4×4 enthusiasts every step of the way.

The latest addition to AOR’s lineup is the Matrix Series 5 (MS5), a 17’6” full-height trailer packed with upgrades to elevate the off-road experience. Featuring AOR’s signature 1950mm wide-body design, it offers a spacious interior and an impressive 2800KG Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM). To make it truly your own, the MS5 comes with a wide range of exterior colour options, along with customisable interior finishes available through AOR’s specialised company portal.

The MS5 truly shines when it comes to off-roading. Its lightweight ultra strong fiberglass body has been redesigned to maximise internal space without increasing its external footprint. Thoughtful enhancements, such as aluminium cabinetry and an exoskeletal framework, improve structural integrity while keeping weight to a minimum. Additionally, the advanced braking system, engineered by Dexter in the U.S, delivers superior stopping power, ensuring safety both on and off road.

The experience continues as you step inside the MS5, where a bright and spacious living area awaits. Upgraded doors and windows enhance the open feel, with slimline window designs and a triple-lock door featuring an expanded fly screen for improved ventilation. The layout has been thoughtfully reimagined to complement the sleeker body design, while enhanced seating ergonomics elevate comfort. Modern touches, including new Inicio acrylic benchtops and splashbacks, stylish taps, upgraded handles, and refined interior lighting complete the contemporary aesthetic.

The 150-litre fridge should preserve enough provisions to sustain you while on your adventure as will the huge battery and solar capability. The impressive standard setup consists of a 350W solar capacity and a 2000W inverter, however, these can be upgraded with the optional 875W capacity and a 3000W inverter. With batteries from the standard 300ah up to a whopping 900ah for the serious off-grid adventurer.

Toilets are often an area that a glossed over in camper reviews, however, you cannot ignore the optional exclusive Air-Head composting toilet, offering durability, comfort and industry leading features such as odour control, the Air-Head ensures a fresh odour-free atmosphere in confined spaces, ideal for off-grid camping.

The MS5 is a very impressive and complete package, backed by the exceptional craftsmanship of AOR’s Australian Manufactured Camper Guild-certification. Owners can have complete confidence knowing that only the finest materials have been used to create their new off-road home.

However, the real testament to quality comes from those who put it to the test. AOR customers have shared their satisfaction, with one owner stating, “The Matrix S5 has truly exceeded expectations, tackling all road types and weather conditions on our initial journey from Bells Creek, QLD, to Clairview and back home to Orange, NSW. It towed like a dream and never let us down, embodying AOR’s unmatched quality and durability.”

Other customers echoed similar praise, with Mr. Stewart commenting, “The unit is well manufactured and robust,” while Mr. Gaske added, “The quality of the product is second to none.”

Customer testimonials consistently highlight that AOR campers stand in a league of their own, supported by exceptional customer service. From the initial sales inquiry to a seamless handover, AOR’s knowledgeable and attentive team ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience. Their dedication doesn’t stop there, outstanding aftersales support means they go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction.

Making a significant financial investment requires peace of mind, and AOR campers deliver just that. A quick look at used caravan and camper listings shows how well these campers retain their value. In fact, AOR is proud that the quality and craftmanship shines through and their campers have the highest resale value in the industry, giving every owner confidence that their investment will hold strong over time.
