KÜHL Eskape 50 Kanvas Duffel: The Bag Our Staff Fought Over

Why the KÜHL Eskape 50 Kanvas Duffel had the whole staff fighting over who got to test it first.

We didn’t expect a duffel bag to cause an argument in the office, but that’s exactly what happened when the KÜHL Eskape 50 Kanvas Duffel showed up for testing. More than one staffer wanted to be the one to take it out on their next trip. That’s usually a good sign, and after living with it, we understand why.

KÜHL built a name on rugged, no-nonsense apparel, and that same philosophy carries over into its Eskape line of travel bags. The 50 Kanvas Duffel, tested here in the Teak colorway, sits at the sweet spot of the lineup: big enough to handle a proper trip, small enough that it doesn’t turn into an unwieldy sack of gear you have to wrestle through an airport or shove into the back of a rig.

Sized Right for a Few Days on the Move

At 50 liters and measuring 25″L x 14″W x 11″H, this duffel lands squarely in the “long weekend to short work trip” category. We found it to be the ideal size for a 2- to 4-day outing, whether that meant a quick basecamp trip in the truck or a carry-on for a short flight. It’s roomy enough to pack layers, a rain shell, and a change of boots without feeling like you’re compressing your life into it, but it’s not so cavernous that you end up overpacking just because there’s space to fill.

For overlanders and van dwellers who already have limited storage to work with, that middle-ground capacity is exactly what makes a duffel earn a permanent spot in the rig rather than getting relegated to the garage.

Organization That Actually Makes Sense

KÜHL Eskape 50 Kanvas DuffelThe compartment layout is where this bag really separates itself from the pile of generic duffels on the market. Instead of one giant cave you have to dig through, KÜHL built in a genuine system: two fast-access exterior zippered pockets for things you need without opening the main compartment, a side pocket that converts to a water bottle holder, and a fleece-lined interior pocket sized for sunglasses or anything else that needs a soft landing spot. There’s also a secured zip pocket with a key clip, a hidden pocket built specifically for a device tracker, and separate compressible end pockets meant for shoes or laundry you’d rather keep away from clean clothes.

On paper, that’s a lot of pockets to remember. In practice, it works because each one has an obvious job. We found ourselves developing a system almost immediately — dirty boots in one end, phone charger and passport in the zip pocket with the key clip, sunglasses tucked into the fleece-lined slot — and never had to think twice about where something was packed. That kind of intuitive organization isn’t as common as you’d think.

Built to Take a Beating

KÜHL constructs the Eskape 50 out of nylon-reinforced canvas with a waxed coating and a DWR finish, then reinforces the areas that see the most abrasion. That translates to a bag that feels substantial the moment you pick it up — not stiff or overbuilt, but the kind of dense, well-finished material that suggests it’s going to age well rather than fall apart after a season of use. The zippers back that impression up. They’re water-resistant, they pull smoothly under load, and they have the kind of solid, tactile feel that makes you trust them even when the bag is stuffed to capacity. Nothing about the hardware felt like a place KÜHL cut corners to hit a price point.

One detail worth calling out: the bottom of the bag held up well when set down on wet ground or a damp trunk liner, keeping the contents inside dry even when the exterior base got soaked. That’s a small thing until you’re loading a duffel off a wet tailgate in the rain or setting it down on dew-covered grass at a trailhead, and it’s the kind of detail that tells you the designers actually use their own gear.

Comfortable to Carry, However You Carry It

The Eskape 50 is built to work as a duffel or a backpack, with stow-away, padded shoulder straps that tuck away when you don’t need them and deploy when you do. A padded back panel and a self-aligning magnetic sternum clip make the backpack mode genuinely comfortable rather than an afterthought bolted on to check a marketing box. The pivoting, anodized hardware on the strap attachment points also does a good job of adjusting the fit regardless of body type or how the bag is loaded, which matters more than it sounds like it should when you’re hauling a fully packed duffel through a terminal or across a campsite.

Where It Fits — and Where It Doesn’t

No bag is perfect for everyone, and it’s worth being upfront about the trade-offs. At 50 liters, this isn’t the bag for ultralight backpacking or anyone trying to shave every possible ounce; the reinforced canvas and hardware that make it durable also add some weight compared to a stripped-down technical duffel. And if your trips regularly run longer than four or five days, you’ll want to look at a larger option in the Eskape lineup or plan on doing laundry along the way.

But for the overlanding and adventure-travel crowd this magazine serves — people who want one well-organized bag they can trust for a long weekend at a trailhead, a multi-day moto trip, or a short work-and-play combo — the sizing and feature set line up almost perfectly.

The Verdict

The KÜHL Eskape 50 Kanvas Duffel earned its spot as one of the most fought-over pieces of gear we’ve had come through the office this year and it’s easy to see why. The organization is genuinely useful rather than gimmicky, the materials and zippers feel like they’re built for the long haul, and small touches — like a base that keeps gear dry on wet ground — show a level of thought that goes beyond just stitching pockets onto a bag. If you’re in the market for a mid-size duffel that can handle a few days away and look good doing it, the Eskape 50 deserves a serious look.
