HEST Sleep System Review: The Van Life Bedding Setup That Actually Delivers a Home-Quality Night’s Sleep

If you’ve spent any real time living out of a van, you already know the dirty secret of overlanding culture: everyone talks about suspension upgrades, solar arrays, and fridge/freezer combos, but almost nobody talks honestly about how badly they’re sleeping. We’ve tested several camp mattresses, pillows, and bedding over the years, and most of it falls into one of two categories — gear that’s portable but punishing, or gear that’s comfortable but is not designed with the unique challenges of a compact rig taken into account.

HEST set out to close that gap, and after putting their Dually Custom S mattress, Camp Pillow, Comforter, and full Jade Cooling bedding set through real nights in a real van, we’re ready to say it: this is the first sleep system we’ve used that genuinely feels like our bed at home.

Who Is HEST?

HEST was founded in 2017 around a simple, almost obvious idea: outdoor gear has always prioritized being light and packable at the expense of comfort, and that tradeoff doesn’t have to exist anymore. The company’s founders were tired of coming home from camping trips more exhausted than when they left, so they set out to engineer the world’s most comfortable portable mattress and build an entire sleep system around it.

The name itself is a nod to that mission. HEST is derived from Hestia, the Greek goddess of the hearth and home, and the brand leans into that idea throughout its product line — bringing the comfort, structure, and quality of home bedding into forms that survive dirt, moisture, temperature swings, and the unique packing puzzle of van life. Rather than treating comfort as an afterthought bolted onto traditional camping gear, HEST designs every product — mattresses, pillows, comforters, sheets — as a coordinated system engineered around body alignment, pressure point relief, and temperature regulation.

That systems-thinking approach is obvious the moment you start using more than one HEST product together, which is exactly how we tested this gear: not as isolated items, but as the complete sleep setup in our van.

The Dually Custom S: A Real Mattress, Not a Pad

The centerpiece of the system — and the piece that mattered most to us — is the Dually Custom S ($799–$899), HEST’s mattress designed specifically for camper vans. This isn’t a generic foam pad that happens to fit in a vehicle; it’s shaped and sized for the job. The curved end piece is contoured to tuck neatly between a Sprinter-style van’s rear doors, and the mattress comes in two width options (Custom S60 and Custom S75) to match different van floor plans.

Construction-wise, the Dually Custom S uses two layers of CertiPUR-US certified memory foam: an enhanced memory foam top layer built for pressure point relief that stays supportive across temperature swings, and a higher-resilience support layer underneath for overall body alignment.

The whole thing is wrapped in a moisture-wicking stretch nylon twill cover on top and a polyurethane-coated nylon bottom that resists dirt and moisture — practical details for anyone who’s dealt with condensation or muddy boots tracking into a sleeping area. A horizontal bi-fold design lets the mattress fold in half for gear storage during the day and unfold into a full sleep surface at night, and a built-in phone pocket keeps your essentials within reach without digging through a bag in the dark.

Here’s the part that matters most: we had the best night of sleep we’ve ever had in our van on this mattress. One of us went to bed with an existing backache and woke up without it — no stiffness, no numb pressure points, nothing that usually comes with sleeping on foam in a moving vehicle.

The two-layer foam setup does what it’s supposed to do; it contours without going soft and mushy, and it doesn’t stiffen up in cooler overnight temperatures the way cheaper memory foam can. It genuinely rivals mattresses we’ve slept on at home, which is a strange thing to say about something relatively thin that lives in the back of a van.

The Camp Pillow: The Most Comfortable Camping Pillow We’ve Used

We were almost as impressed by the HEST Camp Pillow ($79–$129, available in Small, Medium, and Large) as we were by the mattress, and that’s saying something. This is not your typical inflatable travel pillow or a stuffed sack of shredded foam that goes flat by 2 a.m. It uses a blend of shredded enhanced memory foam and polyester fill inside a stretch woven nylon sleep surface, with a contoured, supportive shape that’s designed to sit in the curve of your neck and actually stay put through the night instead of sliding off the mattress.

The standout feature is adjustable loft. A zippered access point lets you customize how much fill is inside the pillow, and if you want more, HEST will send you additional fill for free — a small thing, but it solves the universal pillow problem of “too flat” or “too puffy” for good, rather than making you buy a whole new pillow to fix it. It also has an integrated stow cover that lets the pillow pack into itself, keeping the sleep surface clean and protected during transport, plus a carry loop for clipping it to a bag.

In use, this is simply the most comfortable camping-related pillow we’ve ever tried. It holds its shape, it doesn’t compress into nothing, and it doesn’t have that stiff, hotel-pillow feel that a lot of “travel” pillows default to. Paired with the Dually Custom S, it completes a sleep setup that feels intentionally engineered rather than cobbled together from generic outdoor gear.

The Comforter: Warmth Without the Sleeping-Bag Compromise

Rounding out the core sleep system is the HEST Comforter ($219–$319, in Single and Double sizes), which occupies a smart middle ground between a sleeping bag and a home blanket. It’s filled with 100% recycled polyester that’s bonded without hot-melt adhesive, which keeps the fill soft and flexible rather than stiff and lumpy, and it’s wrapped in a quiet, slightly textured fabric that resists sliding off the bed during the night — a small detail, but a real one if you’ve ever woken up in a van at 3 a.m. because your blanket ended up on the floor.

The feature we appreciated most is the cinch-and-tuck footbox. Unlike a sleeping bag, which constrains your feet inside a fixed shape, the Comforter’s footbox can be cinched tight for warmth and draft protection or loosened so your feet can stick out and regulate body temperature on a warmer night. It’s rated for 40°F and above, which lines up with three-season van camping rather than deep winter use, and it includes a compression sack with a small mesh pocket for stashing earplugs or an eye mask.

It’s also designed with loops that let you attach a top sheet underneath it, which is exactly how HEST intends its bedding to be layered — and exactly how we tested it.

Jade Cooling Bedding: Fitted Sheet, Top Sheet, and Pillowcase

The last piece of the puzzle is HEST’s Jade Cooling collection, which we tested as a full set: the Fitted Sheet Cooling($64–$104), the Top Sheet Cooling ($89–$109), and the Pillowcase Cooling ($21–$31). All three use the same jade-infused stretch nylon fabric, which leans on jade’s natural thermal conductivity to pull heat away from the body and keep the sleep surface feeling cool to the touch, even on warmer nights.

The Fitted Sheet is sized specifically to HEST’s mattress lineup — including sizing that matches the Dually Custom S — with fitted stretch corners that keep it locked in place, plus a small stash pocket for a phone or headlamp, essentially replicating a nightstand inside a van. The Top Sheet layers over the Comforter (or on its own in warm weather) and includes its own footbox design to prevent it from twisting or sliding during the night.

Both pieces are machine washable, which matters more in a van than almost anywhere else — dust, sand, and sweat accumulate fast in a small sleeping space, and being able to strip the bed and wash it like you would at home is a genuine upgrade over gear that has to be spot-cleaned or air-dried.

The Pillowcase Cooling uses the same fabric and is sized to fit all three Camp Pillow sizes, with a fitted overlap design that keeps it from bunching or sliding off the pillow. In practice, the cooling fabric isn’t a gimmick — it has a noticeably cool, silky feel against the skin from the first touch, and it stays that way rather than warming up and trapping heat the way standard sheets do.

Why Sleep Quality Is an Overlanding Issue, Not Just a Comfort Issue

It’s easy to treat bedding as a low-priority line item in a build — something you grab off a shelf after you’ve already sunk your budget into suspension, recovery gear, and power systems. But sleep quality has a direct effect on how you actually experience a trip. A bad night’s sleep on a lumpy pad or a pillow that goes flat by midnight doesn’t just leave you tired; it shows up the next day as slower reaction time behind the wheel, less patience on technical trails, and a general sense that you’re enduring the trip rather than enjoying it.

HEST’s whole design philosophy is built around that idea — that the moments that matter most on a trip aren’t just the scenic overlooks and the campfire conversations, but the deep, restorative sleep that lets you actually recover and show up for the next day. After testing this system, that’s not just marketing language to us anymore. It’s the difference between waking up stiff and sore in a van and waking up ready to drive.

Fit, Sizing, and Practical Setup Notes

HEST-Camper-Van-FitOne thing worth calling out for anyone considering this system for their own rig: HEST clearly put real engineering effort into how these products fit specific vehicle layouts, not just generic “camping” dimensions. The Dually Custom S is offered in two width options to match different van interiors, and HEST’s sizing guide walks through which size pairs with which class of van. The cooling sheet set mirrors that same logic, with fitted sheet sizes mapped directly to HEST’s mattress lineup so you’re not stuck improvising with a sheet that’s a few inches too short or too baggy.

The Camp Pillow’s three sizes and adjustable fill mean two people sharing a van can each dial in their own preferred loft rather than compromising on a single pillow type. It’s a small thing, but it reflects the same systems-level thinking that makes the mattress and comforter work well together: HEST isn’t just making comfortable individual products, they’re making products that are actually designed to be used together in the specific, space-constrained environment of a van.

Setup was straightforward. The Dually Custom S unfolds into place in seconds, the Comforter’s cinch-and-tuck footbox took about one night to get used to before it became second nature, and the cooling sheets stretched over the mattress cleanly thanks to the fitted stretch corners. None of it required tools, straps, or the kind of fiddly installation that some van conversion products demand. That matters when you’re setting up camp after a long driving day and just want to get horizontal.

What We’d Tell a Fellow Overlander

If you’re outfitting a van and trying to decide where to spend your bedding budget, our advice is to start with the mattress and pillow — they made the single biggest difference in how we slept — and build out from there with the Comforter and Jade Cooling set based on your climate and travel season. The cooling sheets are an easy recommendation for anyone who travels through hot-weather regions or simply runs warm at night, while the Comforter’s 40°F-and-above rating makes it a strong three-season piece rather than a deep-winter solution.

Together, the full system runs from roughly $1,200 to $1,700 depending on sizing, which is a real investment — but measured against the cost of a bad night’s sleep on a multi-week trip, or the cost of DIY-ing a foam mattress and cutting your own sheets to fit, it’s a system that pays for itself in comfort alone.

The Verdict

What impressed us most about testing this system wasn’t any single product — it was how well they work together. The Dually Custom S gives you a genuinely supportive sleep surface shaped for van use. The Camp Pillow solves the neck-support problem that most portable pillows never actually address. The Comforter gets the warmth-versus-freedom balance right in a way sleeping bags can’t. And the Jade Cooling sheet set adds the kind of home-bed comfort and easy-clean practicality that most camp bedding simply skips.

For us, the two standouts were the mattress and the pillow. Waking up without the backache we went to sleep with, after what was genuinely the best night’s sleep we’ve had in our van, says more than any spec sheet could. And the Camp Pillow backed it up — it’s simply the most comfortable camping pillow we’ve used, full stop.

HEST’s mission was to bring the comfort of home into portable, adventure-ready gear, and based on our time with this system, they’ve done exactly that. If you’re building out a van and treating sleep as an afterthought behind your electrical system and cabinetry, this is the gear that will make you rethink that priority list.
