The Froli TRAVEL System: The Upgrade That Fixed the One Thing Our New HEST Dually Mattress Couldn’t.
We recently swapped the factory mattress in our van for a HEST Dually mattress, and the difference was immediate. Nights that used to end with a stiff back and a 2 a.m. shuffle to find a cooler spot on the pad turned into some of the best sleep we’ve had on the road, full stop. The Dually‘s layered foam construction does exactly what it promises: real mattress-level comfort in a package built for van and truck camper platforms.
But better foam doesn’t solve every problem that comes with sleeping in a rig. Almost as soon as we got a few humid nights and a couple of hot, sticky days under our belt, we started noticing something familiar to a lot of van lifers and truck camper owners: a damp, slightly musty smell when we lifted the mattress to grab something from the storage below. Condensation. It’s one of the most common and least talked-about issues in vehicle-based sleep systems, and it doesn’t care how good your mattress is.
Why Condensation Happens Under Every Van Mattress
The physics are simple and unavoidable. Your body puts off heat and moisture all night. A foam mattress laid directly on a solid plywood or aluminum platform has nowhere for that moisture to go. Warm, humid air meets a cooler surface underneath, and that temperature differential condenses water right at the boundary between mattress and platform. Over a night, that’s a small amount. Over a season of regular use, especially in humid climates or during shoulder-season trips with big day-to-night temperature swings, that moisture builds into a real problem: mildew, mold, and a mattress that degrades faster than it should.
This isn’t a knock on the Dually or any other quality mattress. It’s a structural issue with how most van and camper sleep platforms are built. Solid platforms trap air, and trapped air holds moisture. Short of leaving your mattress propped against a wall every morning (which nobody actually does), the fix has to happen at the airflow level, not the mattress level.
Enter the Froli TRAVEL System
That’s where the Froli TRAVEL system comes in, and after living with it under our Dually for several weeks now, we’re convinced it’s one of the smarter, lower-profile upgrades available for any RV, van, or truck camper sleep setup.
Froli TRAVEL is a modular support system made of individual plastic spring elements that snap onto low-profile base plates, which in turn connect to one another with small tension clips. Instead of a solid platform, you end up with a lattice of hundreds of tiny suspension points sitting between your plywood base and your mattress. Every element flexes independently, and the gaps between them create continuous channels for air to move underneath the mattress all night long.
The system is genuinely modular, which matters a lot for anyone with a non-rectangular sleeping platform. Vans, truck campers, and boats rarely have perfectly square mattresses, and Froli sells specific kit configurations for exactly that reason. Kits are available in Single, Double, Queen, and King sizes, plus dedicated V-Berth kits (Regular and Large) built with a run of smaller spring elements specifically so the system can wrap around angled and curved bed shapes without leaving gaps.
Our Queen-sized platform used the 99-element Queen kit, which covers roughly 32 square feet and is sized for a mattress around 76 by 60 inches, mixing 81 standard spring elements with 18 softer elements (marked in light blue) positioned for pressure relief in key zones.
Installation is straightforward and doesn’t require any tools. The base plates snap onto the platform footprint, spring elements press into the bases, and tension clips link adjacent elements into a continuous mat. It’s a bit fiddly work for the first hour, especially fitting elements around any odd angles or cutouts in your specific platform, but it doesn’t require any special skill. Give yourself an hour or two for a queen-sized layout and you’ll be done.
Living With It: Airflow You Can Actually Feel
The condensation fix is the headline benefit, and it works. With a solid platform, moisture has nowhere to escape and just sits at the mattress-platform boundary until you air things out manually. With the Froli system installed, that boundary essentially disappears. Air moves freely underneath the entire mattress every night, whether the vehicle is parked, driving, or sitting closed up in storage. On the hot, humid nights that used to leave a faint dampness under the Dually, we now find a dry, cool platform underneath every morning. No musty smell, no visible moisture, no need to prop the mattress up to air it out between trips.
What we didn’t expect was how much the system improved comfort on top of an already excellent mattress. The Dually is comfortable on its own, but the Froli’s independent spring elements add a layer of gentle give underneath it, effectively working with the mattress’s foam layers rather than against a rigid platform. The softer, light-blue elements are placed to relieve pressure under the hips and shoulders, and you can feel the difference lying on your side, which is normally where a firmer van mattress setup gets uncomfortable fastest. It’s a subtle change, but a real one, and it’s the kind of thing that’s easy to dismiss until you sleep on a rig without it again.
A few practical notes worth passing along. The base plates have a slightly slick plastic surface, and depending on your mattress cover material, you may notice some sliding, particularly if you’re lifting the platform up and down regularly for storage access. A few short screws into the plywood base or some Velcro strips at key points solve this easily, and Froli’s support team is happy to talk through mounting options for your specific platform if you call or reach out through their site. Also worth trimming any base tabs that extend past your mattress edge; left alone, they can catch a leg or shin on the way in and out of bed.
Pricing and Where to Find It
Froli TRAVEL kits are sold in North America through Nickle Atlantic, a Charleston, South Carolina-based distributor, and pricing scales with bed size: Single kits run $189, Double kits $329, Queen kits $378, and King kits $476, with V-Berth kits at $279 (Regular) and $329 (Large) for boats and campers with angled bed shapes. Every kit comes backed by a 30-day return window and a money-back guarantee, which takes some of the risk out of ordering for an unusually shaped platform.
The Verdict
For the cost of a kit relative to what most of us have already invested in a quality mattress, a roof top tent, or a full sleep system upgrade, the Froli TRAVEL system is a small addition with an outsized payoff. It solves a problem that’s nearly universal in van and camper builds, one that most people don’t think about until they smell it, and it does so while making an already comfortable mattress noticeably better.
If you’ve recently upgraded to something like the HEST Dually, or you’re running any quality RV mattress on a solid platform, this is one of the easiest, lowest-profile upgrades you can make to protect that investment and sleep better while you’re at it. We’re not going back to a solid platform in this rig, and if you spend any real time sleeping in yours, we don’t think you will either.
