Craig Seckerson of Adventure Rigs Magazine

Craig Seckerson - Australian Writer For Adventure Rigs MagazineFrom the moment Craig Seckerson could walk and talk, he has been fascinated by vehicles of every kind, planes, trains and, most of all, automobiles. If it had an engine and wheels, it had his attention, the quicker it went the more attention it received. Motorsport quickly became a major passion, watching Formula 1 as a little nipper, and moving onto British Touring Cars as a teenager, remembering fondly the iconic Volvo 850 R estates and the strikingly beautiful Alfa Romeo 155s left a lasting impression.

The support racing series also hold a close place to his heart, classic Ford Galaxies with their thumping V8s battling the tiny Minis in spectacular fashion shouldn’t work but it did. Craig spent several years at Le Mans, supporting some amazing teams, the standout car from his time at the legendary race must be the Panoz LMP-1 Roadster S, a fire breathing V8 that really did stand up to its advertising slogan, ‘sounds like thunder, goes like lightning’!

After moving to Australia, the V8 Supercars championship became a firm favourite, but seeing the US-inspired Stadium SUPER Trucks live took racing to another level. Watching drivers launch trucks off ramps at outrageous speeds is pure chaos, and Craig absolutely loves it. That said, the smell of petrol and burning rubber around any motor circuit brings Craig’s inner child firmly to the forefront.

Craig has spent many years within the automotive industry. During the late 2000s and early 2010s, he worked for a London based company specialising in exotic vehicles. Driving Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Mercedes-Benz including the C63 AMG DTM-inspired Black Series, Bentleys, Bugatti, McLarens, Maybach and the stunning Rolls-Royce range became part of everyday life, to the point where it almost felt normal.

One particularly memorable day saw him step out of one of only 25 specially coloured Lamborghini Murciélagos and straight into the driver’s seat of one of London’s famous red double-decker buses, a surreal contrast between two completely opposing driving experiences. A major highlight during this time has to be driving the famous Top Gear indestructible Toyota Hilux, this vehicle is etched into TV automotive folk law, and Craig was happy getting his hands on it before Jeremy Clarkson.

As family life took priority and Australia’s unique environment became home, Craig’s automotive interests naturally evolved. While his passion for cars remains as strong as ever, capable family-oriented vehicles and 4x4s have become firm favourites as have the outdoor lifestyle. Not the kind of off-road vehicles that spend their lives cruising city streets and tackling the occasional gravel driveway, but vehicles genuinely capable of venturing deep off the beaten track and returning safely home.

That passion extends beyond traditional 4x4s, with modern AWD vehicles becoming increasingly impressive in their own right. Advances in automated terrain management systems are remarkable, with vehicles now able to analyze conditions and select the ideal driving settings automatically.

These modern soft-roaders are more capable than ever before. Of course, technology is only part of the equation, driver skill and experience remain critical. That is why Craig has always sought out as many different driving experiences as possible. Driving is more than a hobby to him, it is a lifelong passion that has seen him cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres across numerous countries around the world.

Craig has also pursued performance driving extensively, he is an avid rally enthusiast and has completed training programs in both the UK countryside and the Australian Outback. His motorsport experiences include racing Caterhams on tight technical circuits, racing a Ferrari 488 GTB, piloting a vivid green Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R, and experiencing the thrill of open-wheel Formula Ford machinery.

Yet despite all of these incredible vehicles, karting remains a personal highlight. With performance differences minimal between karts, success comes down almost entirely to driver skill, racecraft and determination, making karting some of the purest and most competitive racing in the world.
