It’s been 15 years since a new Toyota 4Runner was released, and the 2025 all-new, sixth-generation 4Runner ushers in a new era for the popular 4×4 SUV and top choice for overlanding rigs. But what’s getting everyone excited is that the new 2025 4Runner takes inspiration from the Tacoma with the addition of an off-road-focused Trailhunter trim level. This new trim is designed for overlanding adventures. Another exciting addition for 2025 is the release of a hybrid option, too.
Blood Brothers: The 4Runner and Tacoma’s Shared Legacy
The Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma boast a long and intertwined history. The 4Runner itself emerged nearly 40 years ago as a modified version of Toyota’s popular pickup trucks, essentially a four-wheel-drive sibling. This close kinship continues today, with the two models sharing a significant amount of engineering DNA.
Following the Tacoma’s lead, the new 2025 4Runner offers Toyota’s iForce Max hybrid system. This expands Toyota’s growing range of hybrid options, catering to rising consumer demand for eco-friendly alternatives without the full commitment of an electric vehicle.
Power Up or Save Up: The 4Runner’s Engine Options
The 2025 4Runner offers two choices under the hood:
- Hybrid Powerhouse: For those seeking the ultimate power and efficiency, a 48-horsepower electric motor joins forces with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, unleashing 326 horsepower – the most powerful 4Runner ever.
- Gas-Powered Value: More budget-minded adventurers can opt for a traditional, gas-powered version that balances affordability and capability.
The new 4Runner ditches the old 4.0-liter V6 for a more modern and fuel-efficient option. Under the hood now sits a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, pumping out 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This is the same engine found in the Tacoma, and it comes paired with a sophisticated eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the outdated five-speed of the past. While the Tacoma offers a manual transmission with this engine, it appears the 4Runner will be automatic only.
While official fuel economy figures haven’t been released yet, this new powertrain promises significant improvements over the previous generation.
Comfort and Capability Collide
Get ready for a smoother ride! Toyota promises the new 4Runner will handle on-road adventures with improved comfort, starkly contrasting to the current model’s stiffer ride. The 2025 4Runner caters to a variety of drivers with three drivetrain choices:
- Rear-Wheel Drive: Ideal for everyday driving and maximizing fuel efficiency.
- Part-Time Four-Wheel Drive: Perfect for manually engaging four-wheel drive when tackling challenging terrain.
- Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive (Limited & Platinum): Offers automatic front axle engagement for seamless all-weather performance, similar to an all-wheel-drive system.
For off-road enthusiasts, the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter trims boast electronic locking differentials for enhanced traction. The Multi-Terrain Select system expands its capabilities, functioning in 4WD High and Low settings. Additionally, the Crawl Control system, a low-speed off-road cruise control, receives a welcome upgrade – it’s quieter, so you can enjoy the journey without the sound of a “mounted automatic rifle.”
Here’s what else you can expect:
- Functional Favorites Remain: The iconic roll-down back window for hauling long items is here to stay!
- Nostalgic Nod: A subtle design cue pays homage to the first-generation 4Runners with slightly upswept rear side windows.
- Trail-Ready or Luxury Ride: Choose your adventure with the off-road-focused Trailhunter trim, or opt for the luxurious Limited and Platinum options. Varied trim levels ensure there’s a 4Runner for every budget.

Rugged Redesign: Borrowing Strength, Building New Identity
The new 4Runner boasts a bolder look, drawing inspiration from its Tacoma sibling. While not a direct copy, the wider stance and prominent fender flares echo the Tacoma’s off-road prowess.
Here are the key design upgrades:
- More Muscle, More Clearance: The wider track allows for larger 33-inch tires, thanks to increased wheelbase length at the front. This translates to better clearance for tackling tough terrain.
- A Nod to the Past: The upswept rear window design subtly references the first and second-generation 4Runners, offering a touch of nostalgia for longtime fans.
- Muscular Rear End: The new styling creates a visual impression of even more powerful rear haunches, adding to the 4Runner’s imposing presence.

Shared Smarts, Distinct Style: The 4Runner’s Inner Upgrade
The 4Runner’s cabin gets a modern makeover, borrowing the Tacoma’s functional layout. This means you’ll find familiar controls for features like the four-wheel-drive transfer case alongside a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (standard or available depending on trim).
While the overall design echoes the Tacoma, the 4Runner offers unique material and color options, especially in the adventure-ready TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims.
The all-new, sixth-generation 2025 Toyota 4Runner is set for a fall 2024 release. There’s much to be excited about with a bolder design, an available hybrid powertrain, and a functional interior inspired by the Tacoma. This long-awaited upgrade seems well worth the wait for off-road enthusiasts everywhere.
Toyota has not yet provided pricing or fuel economy information for the new 4Runner. Prices for the current of the 4Runner start at around $41,000.
